11 people accused of honey smugglingA Chinese beekeeper harvests honey in Huaying city, southwest Chinas Sichuan Province, August 16, 2010. Eleven people and six corporations have been indicted in a conspiracy to smuggle Chinese honey into the United States, including honey contaminated with antibiotics that are not approved for use in this country, federal officials said Wednesday (September 1, 2010). The scheme was an effort to avoid steep tariffs and customs duties on honey imported from China, an ongoing issue that has led to $40 million worth of the product being seized between 2002 and 2009, prosecutors said. Officials stressed that the smuggled honey, much of it confiscated some time ago, is not believed to have caused harm or illness to anyone who might have consumed it. | Location: Huaying, Sichuan, China.
