Afghan mothers and children share prison time

October 13, 2009, Kabul, Afghanistan: There are some 64 children living with their mothers in Badam Bagh women's prison. Most of the women have been punished for offenses defined as "moral crimes". These are mainly adultery and running away from home, violating social, behavioral, and religious norms, and what many women say are false accusations of crimes by male members of their families. The children of these women have committed no crime but their mothers have decided prison is the best option for them in a poor, war-torn country where a safe, comfortable home is a rarity. In the outside world, these children would be social outcasts because their mothers are prisoners and many of them were accused by their own families of adultery or murder. In prison, the children have food, access to some education, medical treatment and free items distributed by aid groups which proponents argue is more than the average Afghan child gets. In some cases, there is nobody else to look after them. Many prisoners also fear their children would be beaten or even killed by vengeful enemies or relatives, or that greedy family members would marry off their daughters to reap a bride price that often amounts to hundreds of dollars - a fortune in Afghanistan. According to a 2007 report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the separation of women from their children due to imprisonment has a traumatic and long-term effect on the mothers and their children. On the other hand the prison environment is not suitable for the upbringing of children, affecting their health, social, educational and emotional development. Research has also indicated that the children of imprisoned mothers may be at greater risk of future incarceration themselves.///"I don't like children but I like the children in the jail." says Zarafshan Nahibi, the Deputy General Director of Badam Bagh women's prison playing with a young child in the prison. ( automatický preklad  ) ( ukáž pôvodný text )
