CORRECTION-AUSTRALIA-MARINE-SCIENCECORRECTION - CLARIFYING AND ADDING CAPTION INFORMATION A handout photo taken between 2004-2006 originally released by Queensland Brain Institute in 2006 and re-released by the institute in relation to a new phase in their study of deep-sea creatures on July 15, 2010 shows a detailed shot of the skin of a deep-sea squid at a depth of over 1000 metres at the Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, some 350kms north-east of the northern Australian city of Cairns. This still image was taken between 2004 and 2006 as part of a Queensland Brain Institute project to study deep-sea creatures. In July 2010 institute researchers spent 10 days capturing new images of creatures from the dark depths of the ocean with special remote video cameras. Findings of the study now coming to light could prove useful for researchers working in other scientific fields. "Learning more about these creatures' primitive eyes and brain could help neuroscientists better understand human vision,'' lead researcher marine biologist Justin Marshall said.
